LEBANON, Ill. – The 10th ranked Lewis men's volleyball team extended its winning streak to six with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 25-15, 26-24) win at McKendree in Lebanon, Ill., on Thursday evening. The Flyers improved to 13-4 overall and 6-0 in MIVA action while the Bearcats drop to 6-7 and 3-3 in MIVA play.
Lewis hit .418 (59 kills-13-errors-110 total attacks) in the match and was led by Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin) with 17 kills while Julian Moses (Atlanta, GA/Atlanta International School) added 13 kills. Kyle Bugée finished with 11 kills and TJ Murray (Barrington, IL/Barrington HS) contributed 10 kills. Matt Yoshimoto (Ventura, CA/Adolfo Camarillo) handed out 49 assists and had a match-high 12 digs.
McKendree hit .306 (49-15-111) in the contest and was led by Zach Schnittker with 14 kills while Will Frank finished with 11 kills. Ryan Serrano had 38 assists and Francisco Comas had 10 digs.
The Bearcats scored six of the final eight points to win the opening set 25-22. Frank had two kills in the run while Schnittker had an ace.
The Flyers used a 5-1 run early in set two to take a four-point lead and led by as many as five in the frame. McKendree cut the deficit to 21-19 on a kill from Wyatt Dimke but Lewis was able to even the match scoring four of the final six points to win 25-21.
The swing set was all Flyers as they hit .522 in the frame with 14 kills against two errors in 23 chances on its way to a 25-15 victory. Coenen had five kills in the set while Bugée had three and Yoshimoto and Moses finished with two apiece.
Lewis trailed 22-20 in the fourth set but a 4-1 run gave it a 24-23 lead after a kill from Coenen to set up match point. The Bearcats staved off the first set point thanks to a kill from Patrick Ross but the Flyers scored the final two points on back-to-back errors by McKendree.
Lewis continues its five-match roadtrip on Friday (March 1) traveling up to Loyola to take on the Ramblers in a first place battle at 7 p.m.
