SYLVANIA, Ohio - The Fort Wayne men's volleyball team moved to 7-0 after a straight-set (25-17, 25-14, 25-19) win over Lourdes on Wednesday (Jan. 24). Thanks to the win, Fort Wayne ends the month of January without a loss.
Lourdes kept close in the first set, and led at the 16-14 mark, but the Mastodons went on an 11-1 run to close. Tony Price's eight straight serves ended the set in an ace. Colton Stone had five kills in the set.
The 'Dons started the second set hot, earning a 12-3 edge behind seven straight serves from Stone. The Gray Wolves never got any closer than seven points after this point. Fort Wayne native Evan Gebert led LU with four of his nine kills in the second set.
Fort Wayne started well in the third set as well, getting out to an 8-3 edge thanks to six straight. Lourdes tried to get back in it, the 'Dons never had less than a two-point lead after this mark.
Stone paced the 'Dons with a reliable .375 with seven kills. Pelegrin Vargas was the only Mastodon in double-figures in kills, as he tallied 13. Defensively, the digs were spread around. Vargas had nine, Michael Keegan had six (all in the first set), Austin Gerwig had a career-high five and Stone had four. Kolbie Knorr had eight, which tied his high as a Mastodon. Austin Neace and Frederico Santos also had three digs. Richie Diedrich and Tomas Gago both had five block assists.
Fort Wayne moves to 7-0, while Lourdes drops to 1-3. Fort Wayne's perfect month of January is the first occurrence since 2007, when the 'Dons also had a perfect 7-0 January. That team went 8-0 to start the year.
The Mastodons are back in action on Friday (Feb. 2) when they travel to Loretto, Pennsylvania to face Saint Francis, which spent some time in the AVCA Top 15 this season. The 'Dons will also meet Penn State the following day, which is currently ranked eighth in the country.
