Loyola's Collin Mahan has been named the Offensive Player of the Week and Ball State's Matt Szews has been named the Defensive Player of the Week, the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association announced on Tuesday (Feb. 5).
Mahan posted a total of 37 kills to pace the Ramblers in eight total sets good for an average of 4.63. He opened his weekend with 13 kills (3.25 per set) on a .522 hitting percentage and only one error in a 3-1 setback to the UCLA Bruins. In Loyola's 3-1 win vs. Penn State, Mahan logged a single-match career high 24 kills to lead all players. He had a .492 performance in the match. The outside hitter also racked up four service aces to give himself an average of 5.3 points per set on the week.
Matt Szews' blocking played a key role in No. 11 Ball State going 2-0 on the week and winning its fourth-straight match. Against Harvard in a five-set match, Szews had six total blocks including five block assists and one solo. The junior also added two digs. Just one night later, Szews had five blocks with four assists and one solo. He also added four digs in a 3-1 win over Sacred Heart. For the week, Szews totaled 11 blocks and six digs.
