(Lebanon, Ill., Feb. 19) -- The McKendree University men's volleyball team won its third straight match on Monday night, improving to 6-6 overall and 3-1 in Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association play on the season. They defeated Quincy University in four sets at the Harry M. Statham Sports Center, marking their fifth straight victory against the Hawks dating back to the 2016 season.
The Bearcats held Quincy to a .189 hitting percentage in the match, while hitting over .300 as a team. Outside hitter Patrick Ross led the Bearcats offense with 15 kills, while senior Jared Wilcox had a team-high 15 digs. Sophomore setter Zach Schnittker collected 44 assists and ten digs and red-shirt senior middle Brendan Schmidt (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt West) contributed ten kills and five total blocks, leading McKendree in that category.
The Bearcats opened the first set with an 11-3 advantage, forcing Quincy to burn an early timeout. The Hawks cut the deficit to three points late, however McKendree pulled out the opening set 25-20 with a kill from Brendan Schmidt (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt West). Four different Bearcats recorded three kills in the first set.
Quincy turned their fortunes around in the second, taking the set by a score of 25-22, with a kill from Brendon Estrada finishing it off. The Bearcats rebounded in the third, scoring the last five points of the set to take a 2-1 overall lead in the match. McKendree earned their largest lead of the fourth set at 21-17, following an attack error by the Hawks. The Bearcats controlled play the rest of the way, taking the set and the match in four. Patrick Ross led his team in kills with six total in the set.
After playing five matches in a row at home, the Bearcats will now hit the road for a pair of MIVA contests in the Chicago area this weekend. They will face the #8 Loyola University Ramblers on Friday, before heading to Romeoville for a date with the #9 Lewis University Flyers on Saturday.
