Loyola And Ball State Receive Weekly Honors

The Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association has named their weekly award winners for the period ending Feb. 18. Loyola junior outside hitter Collin Mahan has been named the MIVA Offensive Player of the Week. Ball State sophomore setter Jake Romano earned the Defensive Player of the Week Award.

Mahan hit .475 (35-6-61) with 3.89 kills last week as No. 6 Loyola picked up a five-set win at No. 14 Fort Wayne on February 16 before seeing their eight-match win streak snapped with a 3-1 loss at Ball State one night later. He notched 18 kills and hit .516 (18-2-31) in a 3-2 win at Fort Wayne and contributed 17 kills in a 3-1 loss at Ball State. Dating back to last season he has totaled double-digit kills in 17 of his last 18 matches.

Romano helped the Cardinals defeat a pair of top 10 teams. Romano led the team in digs with 27 in the seven sets of play. In a sweep of Lewis, Romano had 14 digs (4.67 digs per set). Against Loyola, he added 13 digs for 3.25 digs per set. Romano had four block assists and one solo block on the weekend.
