PHILIPPI, W.V. - The Fort Wayne men's volleyball team picked up its first win of the season with a 3-0 (26-24, 25-18, 25-21) victory over Alderson Broaddus at the Rex Pyles Arena on Sunday (Jan. 22).
The Mastodons took control from the get-go, snagging the first set of the match for the first time this season. The Battlers held tough in the first set, never letting Fort Wayne get more than three points ahead, but the 'Dons took the last two points on a Pelegrin Vargas kill and an Obenda Besongngem attacking error.
The Rex Pyles Arena became the Mastodons' stomping grounds in the second set, as they charged out to 12-7 advantage, leading by as much as 10 in the second stanza. Colton Stone had the final kill of the set, which was one of his nine. Stone ended the match with only two errors, hitting at a .500 clip. The 'Dons finished with a .347 hitting percentage, which was a broke the previous season-high by .089. Fort Wayne hit a .654 clip in the second set, while only recording one error.
The third set had a similar feel as the first, until the 'Dons took a 20-16 advantage, forcing an Alderson Broaddus timeout. ABU tried to scratch and claw back into the match, but the dagger from Stone completed the match, giving the 'Dons a 3-0 sweep.
Gabriel Quinones and Michael Keegan split time at setter, dishing out 14 and 19 assists respectively. Vargas and Nick Smalter each had six kills, while Graydon Schroeder had five. Austin Neace and Kyle Fitzgerald also contributed four. Keegan led the 'Dons in digs with five, while Vargas and Scott McNerney had four and Smalter and Fitzgerald had three.
Fort Wayne finished with a season-low five service errors.
The 'Dons improve to 1-8 while the Battlers fall to 0-4.
The Blue and White are back in action on Friday (Jan. 27) as the No. 11 George Mason Patriots visit Fort Wayne to play in the Gates Center.
