ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Four members of the MIVA garnered victories on Friday. Five more games will be played on Saturday including the eighth and newest member of the conference in Lindenwood playing in its first match of the season. Below is a recap from the action on Friday.
Ball State at Mount Olive
The Ball State Cardinals earned their fourth victory on Friday night as they defeated Mount Olive, 3-1. Scores of the match were 25-19, 26-28, 25-22, and 25-20).
Senior outside hitter Greg Herceg led the Cardinals with a season-high 21 kills, one kill shy of tying his career-high. For the evening he had a .412 hitting percentage to go along with six assisted blocks, three service aces and three digs. Outside hitter Shane Witmer added a season-high 12 kills off a .391 hitting percentage.
In the fourth set, the Cardinals hit .526 as a team while holding the Trojans to a .217 clip.
Ball State will face-off against Barton on Saturday.
IPFW vs. Lourdes
IPFW won its third match of the season by defeating Lourdes 3-0. IPFW won by scores of 25-22, 27-25, and 25-20.
Despite hitting .233 compared to .299 by Lourdes, IPFW capitalized on 18 service errors by Lourdes to go along with eight service aces by the Mastodons. Anthony Randolph and Bryan Saunders each recorded double-digit kills for IPFW, recording 10 and 11, respectively. Omar Rivera recorded 30 assists for the evening.
IPFW continues play on February 1 against Lindenwood at home.
Lewis vs. NJIT
Lewis picked up its third victory on Friday night by defeating NJIT in three sets, 25-16, 25-14, and 25-23.
Geoff Powell led the Flyers attack, recording a team-high 11 kills at a clip of .400. He also added five digs to his evening. Jay Petty added eight kills of his own along with six digs. BJ Boldog recorded a match-high 30 assists.
As a team, Lewis hit at a .293 while holding NJIT to just .145 for the evening.
Lewis continues play on Saturday with a match against George Mason.
Loyola vs. George Mason
Despite tallying a career-high 28 kills by Joseph Smalzer, the Ramblers fell to George Mason by a score of 3-1. The set scores were 27-29, 25-18, 22-25, and 25-27.
In set two, Loyola held the Patriots to a .091 hitting percentage. Loyola went on a 5-1 run in the middle of the set to take control. George Mason promptly bounced back, taking the final two sets. In the third set alone, Smalzer recorded nine kills.
Loyola hit .306 as a team for the evening while holding George Mason at a .287 clip. Both teams recorded double-digit service errors, but the major difference in the match was the 23 total blocks by George Mason compared to only 12 by Loyola.
Loyola will face-off against NJIT on Saturday.
Grand Canyon vs. Hope International
Grand Canyon won its hope opener and hit a season-high .432 on route to a 3-1 victory over Hope International. The Antelopes won by scores of 25-15, 28-30, 25-17, and 25-18.
Grand Canyon hit .519 in the first set and .565 in the third. Freshman Gerrard Lipscombe had 16 kills on 31 attempts and hit .387 to go with eight digs and five block assists. Ben Ponnet recorded 15 kills while hitting .500 for the evening. Jordon Tarantino added 12 kills of his own while tallying five service aces, five digs and three block assists.
The Antelopes continue play on Saturday with a second match against Hope International.
