Loyola's Smalzer, Ball State's Leske Earn Player Of The Week Honors

Junior Joseph Smalzer and junior Matt Leske earned MIVA Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week for their play during the week of January 14-20.

Smalzer moved to fourth all-time in program history with 105 service aces after collecting seven aces over the week. In Loyola's win over Carthage, Smalzer tied his season-best 4.67 kills/set for a .417 hitting percentage. Smalzer improved to a .471 hitting percentage against Saint Francis, also tabbing three block assists against the Red Flash and helping Loyola to a season-high .412 hitting percentage. In Saturday's match against George Mason, Smalzer collected a season-high four blocks assists for 1.33 blocks per set. He had three consecutive service aces to lead a second set charge against the Patriots, helping him to 1.00 service aces/set.

Leske registered a match-high eight assisted blocks in the 3-1 win over Sacred Heart and had two solo blocks in each of the matches this past weekend. He also contributed four block assists in the 3-1 victory over NJIT. Leske had a 2.00 blocks per set average over the past weekend, and leads the team with 1.91 blocks per set for the season. To add to his defensive efforts, Leske hit at a .455 clip in the match against Sacret Heart, garnering seven kills in 11 attempts.
