Petty's 13 Kills Not Enough As No. 9 Lewis Men's Volleyball Falls To No. 3 UCLA 3-1
HONOLULU - No. 9 Lewis men’s volleyball
opened up Hawaii’s Outrigger Invitational with a 3-1 (25-27,
25-23, 15-25, 18-25) defeat to No. 3 UCLA on Thursday (Jan 12)
evening.
UCLA jumped ahead during the first set with a 14-10 advantage. The
Bruins led 24-21 when a UCLA service error and back-to-back kills
by junior Jay
Petty (Downers Grove, Ill/Downers Grover North) tied the
set at 24. The teams traded points until a Lewis attack error would
eventually give UCLA the set at 27-25.
Lewis would take their first lead of the match during the second
set at 8-7. The set featured 13 ties and three lead changes. Kills
by junior Ian
Karbiener (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) and Petty would
push the Flyers ahead to their biggest lead of the frame at 21-18.
Lewis would never trail again and win the set on a double block
from Karbiener and senior Matt
Gallik (Evergreen Park, Ill/Brother Rice).
The Flyers quickly fell behind in the third set, allowing the
Bruins a 6-0 lead and would never recover.
The match seemed to be in UCLA’s favor as they led the entire
fourth set until a serving run by senior Aaron
Flick (North Ridgeville, Ohio/St. Edward) brought the
Flyers back into the match at 18-16. The run would not be enough
and the Bruins would take the frame 25-18.
Petty would lead Lewis with 13 kills, followed by Karbiener with
nine while adding 10 digs. Sophomore BJ
Boldog (Palatine, Ill/Palatine) recorded 37 assists with
four blocks (two solo). The Bruins out-hit Lewis .400 to .135 and
edged the Flyers in blocks 11.5-to-6.0
UCLA improves to 3-1. Lewis falls to 1-2. Lewis is back in action
tomorrow against the invitational’s host team, No. 13 Hawaii
at 7 p.m. HT and 11 p.m. CT.
