Ohio State’s Shawn Sangrey named Player of the Year, Lewis’ Geoff Powell named Freshman of the Year and Grand Canyon’s Jeremy Prince named Coach of the Year
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association has announced its all-conference selections for the 2012 season. By a vote of the seven conference coaches, Ohio State’s Shawn Sangrey (Sr., Opp, Columbia, Pa.) has been named the MIVA Player of the Year and Lewis’ Geoff Powell (RFr., OH, Claremont, Calif.) has been named the MIVA Freshman of the Year. Grand Canyon’s Jeremy Price was honored as the MIVA Coach of the Year to complete the major awards.
Sangrey guided Ohio State to a 9-3 conference record, a share of its sixth consecutive regular season MIVA championship and the No. 1 seed in the MIVA tournament. He enters the league tournament ranked first in the nation with a 4.97 kills-per-set average, including a 5.00 average in league play. A five-time MIVA Offensive Player of the Week and the March 6 Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men’s National Player of the Week, Sangrey also averaged 5.70 points, 2.00 digs, 0.36 aces and hit .262 in conference play.
Powell helped lead Lewis to a 9-3 conference record and a share of its second regular season MIVA championship in program history. In league play, Powell averaged 2.93 points, 2.53 kills, 1.11 digs, 0.22 aces and hit .290.
In his second season as Grand Canyon’s head coach, Price earns his first MIVA Coach of the Year honor after guiding the ‘Lopes to a 5-7 league record and the No. 4 seed in the MIVA Tournament. It marks the first time in program history GCU will host a MIVA Tournament match.
Lewis, Loyola-Chicago and Ohio State each placed four players on the all-conference team, followed by Grand Canyon with three, Ball State with two, IPFW with two and Quincy with one.
Earning first team honors were: Mik Berzins (Ohio State), BJ Boldog (Lewis), Trent Burns (Grand Canyon), Mike Bunting (Loyola-Chicago), Aaron Flick (Lewis), Peter Jasaitis (Loyola-Chicago), Ivan Matos (IPFW), Jay Petty (Lewis), Ben Ponnet (Grand Canyon), Shawn Sangrey (Ohio State), and Joseph Smalzer (Loyola-Chicago).
Earning second team accolades were: Steven Battaglia (Quincy), Dainis Berzins (Loyola-Chicago), Matt Gallik (Lewis), Peter Heinen (Ohio State), Matt Leske (Ball State), Ryan Mather (Grand Canyon), Kevin Owens (Ball State), Eddie Rivera (IPFW) and John Tholen (Ohio State).
The MIVA Tournament opens today (Friday) with both No. 2 seed Lewis and No. 3 seed Loyola-Chicago hosting quarterfinal matches. The Flyers host No. 6 seed IPFW, while the Ramblers host No. 7 seed Quincy with both matches starting at 7 p.m. CT. The final quarterfinal match will take place Saturday, when No. 4 seed Grand Canyon hosts No. 5 seed Ball State at 6 p.m. MST.
The quarterfinal winners advance to the semifinals Wednesday, April 25. No. 1 seed Ohio State will host one semifinal, playing the winner of Ball State and Grand Canyon. The other two quarterfinal winners will play at the site of the higher remaining seed.
The tournament championship match will be played Saturday, April 28 at the site of the highest remaining seed. The winner of the MIVA Tournament will earn the league’s automatic bid into the 2012 NCAA Men’s Volleyball Championships hosted by USC at the Galen Center in Los Angeles, Calif. The two semifinal matches will be played May 3, culminating with the championship match May 5.
