Hawks Stay Unbeaten With Sweep of Trojans
The Quincy University men's volleyball team kept their
impressive start to the 2012 season going with a 3-0 win at home
over Hannibal-LaGrange University on Tuesday night. The Hawks swept
the match 25-14, 25-23 and 25-22 and have now won seven straight
sets.
Quincy wasted no time in taking control of the match by opening up
the night with nine straight points. Joe Sokol got things started
for the Hawks with a kill off a set by Andrew Ouano. After an
attack error by the Trojans Sokol struck again and John Pranger
followed with a kill of his own. Ouano kept the streak going with
back to back service aces leading to a Trojan timeout. Sokol
greeted the Trojans back to the court with two more kills
sandwiched around a Trojan attack error. A Hawk service error gave
the Trojans their first point of the night.
Quincy was up 20-8 in the match when the Trojans made a late push
to close the score however it was not nearly enough to overcome the
early Hawks lead. Quincy hit .650 as a team in the set with 16
kills and just three errors in only 20 attempts. Hannibal-LaGrange
meanwhile hit just .056 as a team.
Hannibal-LaGrange took a 10-7 lead in the second set before the
Hawks were able to finally even the score up at 12-12 with three
straight points. The Hawks took the lead with back to back Trojan
attack errors and held a 17-15 edge. Quincy did not trail again in
the set although the Trojans closed the score to 24-23. A kill by
Joe Sokol ended the set in favor of the Hawks.
Quincy jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the third set and would hold a
comfortable lead for most of the set. Hannibal-LaGrange closed the
score to 23-21 but the Hawks picked up a pair of kills by Steven
Battaglia to finish off the Trojans for the match victory.
Quincy hit .397 as a team in the match with 40 kills and 11 errors
in 73 attempts. The Hawks finished with six team blocks and four
service aces. Joe Sokol lead Quincy with 14 kills while John
Pranger remained nearly automatic with nine kills in his nine
swings. Andrew Ouano finished with 37 assists while Joe Sokol also
led the team with five digs. Quincy improves to 4-0 on the season
and returns to action on Friday night when they are on the road
against Lindenwood University.
