2011 MIVA All-Conference Team Announced
Ohio State’s Steven Kehoe named Player of the Year, Loyola-Chicago’s Joseph Smalzer named Freshman of the Year and Ohio State’s Pete Hanson named Coach of the Year
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association has announced its all-conference selections for the 2011 season. By a vote of the seven conference coaches, Ohio State’s Steven Kehoe (5th-Sr, S, North Bend, Ohio) has been named the MIVA Player of the Year and Loyola-Chicago’s Joseph Smalzer (RS-Fr., OPP, Palos Heights, Ill.) has been named the MIVA Freshman of the Year. Ohio State’s Pete Hanson was named the MIVA Coach of the Year to complete the major awards.
Kehoe guided Ohio State to an 11-1 conference record and its fifth consecutive regular season MIVA championship. He averaged 11.08 assists per set in conference play to rank first in the league. Kehoe averaged 1.15 points, .36 kills, .38 aces (3rd), 1.56 digs (12) and .74 blocks per set while hitting .387 in conference play.
Smalzer ranked fourth in points (4.28), fifth in kills (3.58), fourth in aces (.37) per set in conference play. He averaged .62 blocks and 1.42 digs per set while hitting .272.
Hanson has won or shared Coach of the Year honors the last five years and 11 times overall.
Ball State, Lewis, and Ohio State each placed four players on the all-conference team. IPFW and Loyola-Chicago added three players each. Ball State’s Anders Nelson (5th-Sr., MA, St. Croix Falls, Wis.) and Tommy Rouse (RS-Fr., L, Carmel, Ind.)were first team selections with J.D. Gasparovic (Sr., MA, St. Louis, Mo.) and Larry Wrather (So., OA, Lake Bluff, Ill.) earning second team honors. Jay Petty (RS-So., OH, Downers Grove, Ill.) of Lewis was named to the first team withBJ Boldog (RS-Fr., S, Palatine, Ill.), Aaron Flick (RS-Jr., MB, North Ridgeville, Ohio) and Matt Gallik ( RS-Jr., MB, Evergreen Park, Ill.) named to the second team. Joining Ohio State’s Kehoe on the first team were Kevin Heine (5th-Sr., MB, St. Louis, Mo.), John Klanac (5th-Sr., OH, Orchard Park, N.Y.) andShawn Sangrey (Jr., OPP, Columbia, Pa.). Loyola-Chicago’s Mike Bunting (Jr., OH, Wyomissing, Pa.) and Smalzer were first team selections with Mike Hutz (RS-Sr., S, Whitefish Bay, Wis.) named to the second team. Earning first team honors for IPFW was Darryl Shank (Sr., OH, London, Ont.) with Corey Frain (Jr., MB, Elwood, Ill.) and Eddie Rivera (Fr., OH, Carolinas, P. R.) selected to the second team. Rounding out the first team was Grand Canyon’s Trent Bruns (So., L, Mission Viejo, Calif.). Quincy’s Kyle Volstad (Sr., MH, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) was a second team selection.
The MIVA Tournament opens this weekend with three quarterfinal matches. Top seeded Ohio State received a bye in the quarterfinals. Friday, No. 5 seed IPFW plays at #4 seed Lewis. Saturday No. 7 seed Grand Canyon is at No. 2 seed Loyola-Chicago and No. 6 seed Quincy plays at No. 3 seed Ball State. The winners advance to the semifinals Wednesday, April 27. Ohio State will host one semifinal playing the winner of IFPW and Lewis. The other two quarterfinal winners will play at the site of the higher remaining seed. The tournament championship match will be played Saturday, April 30. The highest remaining seed will host the match.
