No. 12 Lewis Drops MIVA Match At Ball State 3-1
MUNCIE, Ind. - No. 12 Lewis men's volleyball dropped a 3-1 (25-17, 23-25, 25-21, 25-21) decision at Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association rival Ball State on Friday evening.
Sophomore Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) led Lewis with 15 kills. Senior Brian Muesenfechter (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers) added nine kills and seven digs. Freshman libero Roberto Torres-Davis (Mayaguez, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Benito) totaled nine digs.
After dropping the first set, Lewis knotted it up by winning the second. Lewis pulled away with a 6-0 run in the middle of the set. Muesenfechter had an ace in the run.
Things were looking up for the Flyers in the third set after the Flyers took a 16-12 advantage. However a 6-2 Ball State push tied it at 18. From there Ball State finished on a 7-3 stretch to win the set.
Ball State opened a 17-8 lead in the fourth set. Lewis rallied to make it interesting at 20-18 and 22-21 but couldn't knot it up.
Ball State out-hit Lewis .342 to .168.
"We struggled putting it together offensively tonight," head coach Dan Friend said. "Be it passing, hitting or decision making when we had one aspect going the others were not."
The Cardinals' win avenged a loss in Romeoville earlier this year to Lewis.
Ball State improves to 13-8 (4-4 MIVA). Lewis falls to 15-8 (3-4 MIVA). The Flyers play at George Mason on Saturday.
