Lewis' Roberto Torres-Davis Named MIVA Defensive Player Of The Week

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis freshman libero Roberto Torres-Davis (Mayaguez, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Benito) has been named the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.

Torres-Davis helped Lewis to a 1-1 record last week including an upset of No. 5 Long Beach State on Friday evening. Torres-Davis collected a career-high 16 digs in the 3-2 win against Long Beach State and handled 35 of 36 serve reception attempts. The win was the first over Long Beach State in Lewis program history and the highest ranked team Lewis has defeated during the Dan Friend era.

In a 3-0 loss to then No. 5 UC Santa Barbara, Torres-Davis recorded seven digs and handled 23 of 26 serve reception attempts. For the two matches, Torres-Davis averaged 2.88 digs per set and had a .935 serve reception percentage.

His play helped Lewis move up two spots in the latest AVCA Division I-II Poll to No. 12.

“Roberto is getting better and better each week and his stats reflect that,” Friend said. “He’s set career highs in digs the last couple weeks as his defense continues to improve.”

It is the second weekly honor for Torres-Davis. He took home 2011’s first MIVA Defensive Player of the Week honor on Jan. 18.

Lewis is 13-6 (3-2 MIVA). The Flyers host NJIT on Friday and George Mason on Saturday. Both matches start at 7 p.m.
