No. 5 UC Santa Barbara Sweeps No. 14 Lewis
LONG BEACH, Calif. - Sophomore Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) recorded nine kills and nine digs on Saturday night however No. 14 men's volleyball dropped a 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-17) decision to No. 5 UC Santa Barbara in a neutral site match played at Walter Pyramid on the campus of Long Beach State.
The Flyers led the opening set 21-19 when the Gouchos finished on a 6-0 run. The second set was tied at 10 when UC-Santa Barbara pulled away with five straight points. The third and final set was all UC Santa Barbara.
"We struggled with mental maturity in certain instances tonight," head coach Dan Friend said. "We didn't take advantage of opportunities we had given to us and UC Santa Barbara did."
Junior Matt Gallik (Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice) totaled six kills on 10 swings. Senior Brian Muesnfechter (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers) added five kills. Sophomore Ian Karbiener (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) tallied eight kills and two blocks.
The Gouchos out-hit the Flyers .375 to .218.
The loss comes after Friday's victory over No. 5 Long Beach State.
"After last night's performance it is important to comeback and play like that again and we didn't," Friend said. "It wasn't just one guy, we lacked in several areas."
UC Santa Barbara improves to 12-9. Lewis falls to 13-6. The Flyers host NJIT on Friday at 7 p.m.
