No. 15 Lewis Rallies In Fourth Set For 3-1 Win At Lees-McRae
BANNER ELK, N.C. - Sophomore Ian Karbiener (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) hit .440 with 15 kills and sophomore Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) hit .400 with 12 kills to lead No. 15 Lewis men's volleyball to a 3-1 (25-16, 25-20, 24-26, 26-24) road non-conference victory over Lees-McRae on Saturday evening.
The opening set victory was highlighted by a 9-0 Lewis run. Senior Brian Muesenfechter (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers) had five aces in the run. His five aces tie a career mark. The Flyers out-hit the Bobcats .545 to .333 in the first set.
The Flyers never trailed in the second set. The third set was back-and-forth with 17 ties and 12 lead changes. Lewis turned away one Lees-McRae set point before the Bobcats scored two straight to take the frame.
The Flyers led the fourth stanza 7-3 only to fall behind 24-21. Lewis came back win the set and the match by scoring five consecutive points. Freshman setter BJ Boldog (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) had three assists and a kill in the final five points.
Boldog finished with 38 assists in three sets.
"It was good to see Ian find a rhythm," head coach Dan Friend said. "Jay was steady for us for a second day and BJ's numbers were an improvement from yesterday."
Lewis finishes the three-match road trip to start the season 3-0. Lees-McRae falls to 0-1.
"It was a good trip," Friend said. "We got three wins and earned some experience."
Lewis hosts Carthage on Tuesday evening for the 2011 home opener.
