Loyola Men's Volleyball Welcomes Four Newcomers To 2010 Squad
CHICAGO - When the Loyola University Chicago men's volleyball team hits the court to open the 2010 season, four players will be seeing their first action in Maroon and Gold. Teddy Adamczyk (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South), Peter Jasaitis (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Loyola HS), Matt Mirick (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Loyola HS) and Joseph Smalzer (Palos Hills, Ill./Marist) will all join the Ramblers for the 2010 campaign.
Adamczyk joins Loyola as a redshirt sophomore after transferring from UCLA. The libero received numerous awards in high school, including Honorable Mention All-America in 2007 and All-State in 2006 and 2007, along with multiple accolades from local media. Along with leading Maine South to the 2006 Illinois state championship, Adamczyk left high school as the career and single-season record holder at Maine South with 1,005 kills, good for 13th place in Illinois state history.
Jasaitis and Mirick continue their volleyball careers as teammates after leading Loyola High School in Los Angeles, Calif., to Mission League, CIF SoCal Region and Southern Section titles in 2009. Mirick, a setter, was named CIF Southern Section Player of the Year, Mission League MVP and Loyola Athlete of the Year, along with earning AVCA First Team All-America status in 2009. Despite missing most of his senior season due to injury, Jasaitis started at libero for Loyola in 2008 and 2009.
Smalzer joins the Ramblers at setter after helping Marist to three conference titles, two regional titles and the 2009 sectional crown. He was named East Suburban Catholic Conference Player of the Year in 2008 and 2009 and earned Volleyball Magazine "Fab 50" and AVCA First Team All-America status in 2009.
The Ramblers open the 2010 regular season on Jan. 7, hosting Windsor at 4 p.m. at Alumni Gym.
