UCLA, Pepperdine and MIVA matches highlight schedule

More home matches and road trips to some of the top programs in the nation highlight the 2010 Grand Canyon University Men's Volleyball schedule released Wednesday.

The Lopes will have 13 home matches, nine more than last season.

As part of the initial season in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association, GCU will travel to Final Four particpant Ohio State, as well as, take conference trips to Ball State, IPFW, and Lewis. Ball State, Loyola-Chicago and Quincy will come to Antelope Gym.

Like in the program's first season in 2009, Grand Canyon will take on the NCAA's all-time winningest program in a visit to UCLA. Also added to the mix are Pacific and Pepperdine of the highly-regarded Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

The season opens in Stockton, Calif. Jan. 8 against UC Santa Cruz and Pacific. The home portion of the season begins Jan. 16 against Johnson and Wales. The first MIVA match of the year is Jan. 21 at Ball State. The first home conference contest is March 9 also against Ball State. The MIVA tournament is April 23-May 1 at a to be determined site.

"It's a great schedule for a second-year program," said GCU head coach Chad Speer. "In the MIVA and having three MPSF teams on the schedule, our schedule is even stronger than last year. At the same time, I believe there are more winnable matches.

"It's great to be in the MIVA and working to get to the top of that league as we build our program."
