Ted Schoenfeldt Named the Sports Imports/American Volleyball Coaches Association Division I-II National Player of the Week
COLUMBUS, Ohio
– Ohio State middle hitter Ted
Schoenfeldt and libero Mik Berzins have
been honored for their play last week in the MIVA Tournament.
Schoenfeldt has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Div. I-II
National Player of the Week and the Midwestern Intercollegiate
Volleyball Association Offensive Player of the Week. Schoenfeldt
recorded a career-high 12 blocks (1-11) in the 3-2 come-from-behind
win over 15th-ranked Loyola-Chicago to win the MIVA Tournament and
earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Championship semifinals. He
added nine kills, hit .412 and had one ace serve and four digs.
Trailing 2-1, Schoenfeldt contributed four assist blocks in game
four to help tie the match at two games each. In the deciding fifth
game he recorded four kills and four assist blocks. OSU’s
final three points of the game came from Schoenfeldt kills to
secure the victory. He was named the Most Outstanding Player of the
Championship match and named to the all-tournament team. In
the MIVA Tournament semifinals against 13th-ranked (tie) Ball
State, Schoenfeldt had eight kills while hitting .538. He added one
dig and two assist blocks. This marks the second time that
Schoenfeldt has won the national honor, winning his first in
2009.
Berzins has been named the Midwestern
Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Defensive Player of the
Week. Berzins averaged 2.33 digs per game and had a .985 serve
reception percentage in the wins over 13th-ranked (tie) Ball State
and 15th-ranked Loyola-Chicago to help Ohio State win the MIVA
Tournament and advance to the NCAA Championship semifinals. Berzins
had eight digs and one assist against Ball State and handled 29
serve receptions without an error. In the championship match
against Loyola-Chicago, he recorded a match-high 13 digs, two
assists and had a .974 serve reception percentage handling 37 of 38
receptions. This is the third time Berzins has been honored this
season as the MIVA Defensive Player of the Week.
Fourth seed Ohio State (22-7) will face
host and top-seed Stanford (22-6) Thursday night at 11 p.m. ET in
the second semifinal of the NCAA Championship in Maples Pavilion at
Stanford.
