Ohio State's Shawn Sangrey and Grayson Overman Named the MIVA Players of the Week

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State men's volleyball opposite Shawn Sangrey has been named the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association offensive player of the week and middle blocker Grayson Overman the defensive player of the week for their play last week.

Sangrey, in the 3-0 (30-12, 30-16, 30-25) victory over George Mason, in the semifinals of the Volleyball Hall of Fame/Morgan Classic in Springfield, Mass. posted a career-high four ace serves against the Patriots and totaled 20.5 points in the match. He added 14 kills while hitting .360, nine digs and five assist blocks. Sangrey had a team-high 21 points in the 3-0 (34-32, 32-30, 30-17) loss to UC Santa Barbara in the championship match with 21 kills (.295) and five digs. For his play, he was named to the Volleyball Hall of Fame/Morgan Classic All-Tournament Team. Sangrey averaged 6.92 points, 5.83 kills, .67 aces, 2.33 digs and .83 blocks per game while hitting .319. This is the second time this season Sangrey has been honored as the MIVA Offensive Player of the Week.

Overman, in the win over George Mason, recorded an OSU match record 14 block assists against the Patriots. The previous record of 13 was held by Scott Spurlock (at Lewis, 2/1/04), Colin McMillan (at IPFW, 1/29/99 and Juniata, 3/11/98), Jon Yunker, UC Santa Cruz, 3/29/93) and Tom Hoff (vs. IPFW at Ball State, 4/24/93). He tied the Buckeye match record for total blocks with 15 (1-14) and now shares the mark with Rene' Esteves (at Lewis, 2/27/99), David Frette (at Ball State, 4/10/91) and Tom Hoff (vs. IPFW at Ball State, 4/24/93). He added two kills and one assist against the Patriots. This is the second double-figure block match by Overman. He recorded 11 total blocks at Loyola-Chicago with a solo and 10 assist blocks. In the 3-0 (34-32, 32-30, 30-17) loss to UC Santa Barbara in the championship match, Overman had three assist blocks, two kills, one dig and one assist. In the two matches, he averaged 3.00 blocks, 2.25 points, .67 kills while hitting .300.

The Buckeyes (10-6 overall, 5-1 MIVA), ranked 13th nationally, host ninth-ranked Penn State (11-2) at 7 p.m. Wednesday in St. John Arena. Admission is free.
