Grand Canyon Falls to No. 1 Cal Baptist

Grand Canyon, for the second straight match, lost to a No. 1
ranked team in the nation.
After falling to NCAA No. 1 Pepperdine Wednesday, the Antelopes
were defeated 3-0 by NAIA No. 1 Cal Baptist Friday at Antelope Gym.
The teams meet again Saturday at 7 p.m.
Against the Lancers, GCU lost by set scores of 30-22, 30-26,
30-27.
In both Game 2 and Game 3, the Antelopes had leads at the midway
point and further but were unable to hang on against a team that
gave Pepperdine and UCLA losses on back-to-back nights early in the
season.
The Antelopes led as late as 15-14 in the second set and were tied
23-23 before CBU scored seven of the final 10 points.
GCU led much of third set and by as much as four points as late as
20-16, following a kill from freshman Zach Neilson
(Phoenix, Ariz./Sandra Day O'Connor). A kill from frosh
Chris Lockwood (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood) stopped
a CBU rally, but only momentarily, to give GCU a 23-22 advantage.
Lockwood led the Antelopes with 13 kills and had just one error for
a .571 attack average. He also had two solo blocks. Sophomore
Brock Hutchins (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland/Hawai'i)
finished with 11 kills. Sophomore Taylor Griffin (Tucson,
Ariz./Ironwood Ridge) had seven kills and five digs. Frosh
Trent Bruns (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo)
had 10 digs.
Along with 33 assists, Grand Canyon freshman setter Brad
Moore (Orange, Calif./Lutheran) had two block assists.
Sophomore Nick Jensen (Herning, Denmark/Ikast
Gymnasium/NJIT) had two solo blocks and two block assists.
