No. 15 Lewis Wins MIVA Opener Over Quincy 3-0
QUINCY, Ill. - No. 15 Lewis swept the Quincy Hawks 30-18, 30-27, 30-28 in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association opener for both schools on Tuesday evening.
Quincy led the opening set 7-5 until a 6-1 run gave the Flyers an 11-8 lead. Back-to-back aces by senior Mike Iandolo (Orlando, Fla./Long Beach State) highlighted the run. Sophomore Matt Gallik (Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice) added back-to-back aces of his own later in the set to help Lewis take the set by 12 points.
The Flyers trailed the second set 20-16 following a 5-1 push by Quincy. Joseph Ascher had two kills in the run. A Lewis timeout turned the tide as the Flyers followed with five consecutive points. Quincy led 27-26 when the Flyers won the set with four straight points. Junior Brian Muesenfechter (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers) had the kill on set point for Lewis.
It looked like the Hawks were going to force a fourth set after taking leads of 11-7 and 21-17. The Flyers knotted the score at 21 thanks to four consecutive points. Muesenfechter had two kills in the run. Quincy led 24-23 when a 3-0 Lewis stretch helped give the Flyers breathing room till Quincy tied it at 28. Freshman Ian Karbiener (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) followed with a kill and then a bad set by Quincy's Dan Dresen gave Lewis the match on the following point.
Karbiener finished with a match-best 14 kills and nine digs. Lewis senior libero Rikki Garma (Lihue, Hawaii/Ost) also had nine digs. Senior Nathan Klaas (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) totaled 14 kills. Muesenfechter finished with eight digs and seven kills. Iandolo totaled 37 assists.
Joseph Sokol led the Hawks with 10 kills.
Quincy falls to 2-2 (0-1 MIVA). Lewis improves to 6-1 (1-0 MIVA). The Flyers make their annual trip to Fort Wayne, Ind. on Friday evening to face conference-foe IPFW. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
