Loyola's Kris Berzins Named Sports Imports/AVCA National Player Of The Week
CHICAGO (Feb. 1, 2010) - Loyola University Chicago senior Kris Berzins has been named Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's Volleyball National Player of the Week, the AVCA announced this afternoon (Feb. 1).
Berzins earns the award for the second time in his career after leading the Ramblers to a 3-0 record last week, including two wins over ranked teams.
Berzins helped Loyola earn sweeps over MSOE (30-22, 30-23, 30-19) and No. 15 Saint Francis (30-26, 30-21, 30-21) and led an inspired team effort over fifth-ranked Penn State (30-26, 22-30, 24-30, 30-25, 15-7).
Over the three-match span, Berzins racked up 34 kills, 14 digs, six service aces and five blocks. The Brinklow, Md., native is currently second on the team in kills (65) and points (81).
The senior opened the week with two kills, an ace and a block in two sets against MSOE. He followed that up by hitting .500 (11-2-18) and setting a personal season high in digs (7) in the win over Saint Francis. Berzins' week concluded with a season-high 21 kills, seven digs and a career-high four aces against PSU.
The Ramblers return to the court next Friday (Feb. 12) to host NJIT at 7 p.m. before welcoming MIVA rival and nationally-ranked Ohio State to Alumni Gym on Saturday (Feb. 13) at 4 p.m.
