No. 10 Ohio State Falls to No. 12 Hawaii, 3-0

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 10th-ranked Ohio State (0-1 overall) men's volleyball team opened the 2010 season with a 3-0 (30-20, 30-20, 30-26) loss at 12th-ranked Hawaii (1-0) in the opening round of the Outrigger Hotels Invitational played in the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. OSU's Shawn Sangrey posted a team-high 11.5 points with 11 kills and one assist block. John Klanac added 9.5 points with eight kills, one solo block and one assist block. Hawaii's Jonas Umlauft recorded a match-high 17.5 points for the Warriors with 14 kills, two ace serve, a solo block and one assist block. Joshua Walker added 17 points with 17 kills.

Hawaii scored the first three points of game one with an Umlauft kill, a Buckeye error and a Matt Rawson-Umlauft kill. The Warriors never trailed in the game closing it out with a Walker kill for a 30-20 win. Hawaii hit .552 for the game while Ohio State hit .207.

Game two saw the Buckeyes hold two leads off Warrior errors at 4-3 and 5-4. After eight ties, the game was even at eight. A Buckeye error and an Umlauft kill gave Hawaii a 10-8 lead. A 7-3 Warrior run put Hawaii up 17-11. Hawaii held the lead, scoring the final three points to win, 30-20, with a Rawson kill. Hawaii hit .417 for the game to .214 for Ohio State.

Ohio State opened game three with a Kevin Heine-Sangrey block for a 1-0 lead. The game was tied 16 times and had seven lead changes. Ohio State took a 21-20 lead off a Warrior error. Hawaii regained the lead with kills from Rawson and Walker at 22-21. A Warrior error tied the game at 22. An Umlauft kill and a Warrior error gave Hawaii a 24-22 lead. Leading 28-25, a Rawson kill set match point at 29-25. A Hawaii error made it 29-26. The Warriors won the game, 30-26, on a Walker kill to win the match 3-0. Hawaii hit .297 for the game to .289 for the Buckeyes.

For the match, Hawaii hit .411 to .245 for Ohio State. The Warriors had a 50-40 advantage in kills. Hawaii scored five ace serve while not allowing one for the Buckeyes. UH's Gus Tuaniga recorded a match-high three aces. OSU gave up 19 service errors to 12 for the Warriors. Defensively, Hawaii had a 36-21 margin in digs and a 7.0 to 6.5. Hawaii's Walker and OSU's Mik Berzins shared match-high honors with nine digs each. Warrior Steven Grgas collected a match-high five assist blocks in the contest.

The Buckeyes continue play in the Outrigger Hotels Invitational at 4 p.m. HT Friday facing top-ranked Southern California (1-0), 3-0 (30-28, 30-24, 30-20) winner over fifth-ranked Penn State (0-1) in the first round.
