Quincy Tops Defending Champion Lindenwood In Five Set Thriller

(St. Charles, Mo.) The Quincy University men's volleyball team picked up their first win of the 2010 season and it was a big one, defeating defending NAIA National Champion and #2 ranked Lindenwood University 3-2 in St. Charles, Mo.

Quincy showed they came to play in the first game with an impressive 30-23 win. The Hawks pounded out 17 kills in the game with just two attack errors as they hit .441 as a team. The Hawks dropped the second game 30-24 but rebounded to win game three 31-29.

Quincy trailed 17-13 in game three and did not even the score up until 23-23 on an attack error by the Lions. Quincy took their first lead of the game at 25-24 when Dan Dresen and Chris Zeidler blocked an attack by the Lions. The game was tied at 29-29 when Peter Coley put the Hawks within one point of a win with a kill off a set from Dresen. The game ended when Zeidler stuffed the Lions Rick Hess for a 31-29 Quincy win.

Lindenwood took the fourth game 30-28 as Quincy was unable to finish off the Lions and sending the match into a fifth and decisive game. Lindenwood took an early lead in the fifth game at 3-2 but Quincy rallied to take a 6-4 lead behind kills from Zeidler and Tim Lovik. The game was even at 10-10 when Lindenwood held serve but the Hawks swung the momentum to their favor on a kill by Coley. Coley ripped another kill to give the Hawks a two point lead when Lindenwood gained the serve back on the next play to bring the score to 12-11. Zeidler gave the serve back to the Hawks with a kill and after an attack error by the Lions the Hawks were set up for a chance to serve for the match win. Just as game three ended once again Zeidler teamed with Joseph Sokol to stuff a Lion attempt and give Quincy a 15-11 win.

Quincy hit .295 as a team with 69 kills and just 18 attack errors while recording 14 total team blocks. Coley led the Hawks with 17 kills while Sokol finished with 16 kills and 10 digs. Dan Dresen finished the match with 57 assists while Tanner Wright added 17 digs. Zeidler added 11 kills with two solo blocks and seven block assists. Quincy improves to 1-1 overall this season.
