Billy Ebel named the MIVA Defensive Player of the Week
MUNCIE, Ind. - - After averaging 3.8 digs per set in three matches last weekend, Ball State men's volleyball senior libero Billy Ebel (Lenexa, Ka./Bishop Miege H.S.) has been named the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Defensive Player of the Week.
"Billy got off to a really good start in our first three matches last weekend," said Ball State head coach Joel Walton. "Last season, he averaged 2.81 digs per game to rank second in the league, which makes his 5.0 digs-per-game average Sunday at MSOE a phenomenal total."
Ebel helped led the Cardinals to a 2-1 record on its season-opening road trip by collecting a team-high 38 digs for a league-leading 3.8 digs-per-game average.
In the Cardinals' season-opener at Loyola last Friday, Ebel led the BSU backcourt with eight digs. He followed the effort with a match-high 15 digs in a four-set win at Carthage Saturday, while racking up another match-best 15 digs in a sweep of the Milwaukee School of Engineering Sunday to close the weekend.
Over his career, Ebel has collected double-digit digs in 17 matches to rank 16th in program history in matches with double-figure digs. His 38 digs in the opening weekend also upped his career total to 390, which leaves him 126 digs shy of the top 20 in program history.
The Ball State men's volleyball team returns to action Thursday, when it host first-year MIVA member Grand Canyon in a 7:30 p.m. first serve at Worthen Arena. Admission for the match is free.
