No. 13 Ohio State Defeats Juniata, 3-0

The 13th-ranked Ohio State (2-4 overall, 1-0 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men's volleyball team won a 3-0 (30-26, 30-21, 30-28) road victory over Juniata (0-1) Monday night in Huntingdon, Pa. OSU's Grayson Overman posted a co-match-high of 13 points for the Buckeyes with nine kills (.333), one ace serve, two solo blocks and two assist blocks. Kevin Heine added 12.5 points with a team-high 10 kills (.444), two solo blocks and one assist block. Zach Wanner recorded a co-match-high 13 points for Juniata with 10 kills (.065), one ace serve and two solo blocks. Chris Vrooman (nine kills (.211), two assist blocks) and Evan Halteman (eight kills (.278), one solo block and two assist blocks) each added 10 points for the Eagles.

Tied at nine in game one, a Ted Schoenfeldt kill, an Overman solo block, and an Overman-John Klanac block gave the Buckeyes a 12-9 lead. Trailing, 13-10, Juniata kills from Wanner and Vrooman cut the OSU lead to one at 13-12. A Klanac kill, a Steven Kehoe-Overman block and an Eagle error gave the Buckeyes a 16-12 lead. Ohio State reached game point at 29-25 with a Schoenfeldt kill. An OSU error stopped the game point at 29-26. A kill from Klanac gave Ohio State a 30-26 game win to lead the match, 1-0. For the game, Ohio State hit .257 to .138 for Juniata.

A solo block by Heine and his kill opened game two to give Ohio State a 2-0 lead. Juniata made it 2-1 with a Ben Wolff-Dan Follett block. A Mike Stefani kill and an Eagle error made it 4-1, OSU. At 13-11, kills from Klanac and Overman and two Juniata errors opened a 17-11 OSU lead. A Wanner kill and two OSU errors cut the lead to three at 17-14. Leading, 22-19, the Buckeyes scored the next five points to open a 28-19 lead. The run began with kills from Klanac and Shawn Sangrey, a Klanac-Sangrey block and a Juniata error forcing an Eagle time out at 26-19. Solo blocks by Sangrey and Overman put the lead at 28-19. An Evan Halteman kill stopped the run at 28-20. OSU reached game point at 29-20 with a kill from Sangrey. A Wanner kill stopped the game point at 29-21. The Buckeyes won the game, 30-21, with a Klanac kill to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .265 for the game to .097 for the Eagles.

Ohio State opened game three with two kills from Heine and a rotation error by Juniata for a 3-0 lead. At 4-1, three Buckeye errors tied the game at four. The squads exchanged points to reach 15-all. A Wanner ace serve and a kill from Halteman gave Juniata a 17-15 lead. A Kehoe block and a Halteman kill made it 18-16. OSU tied the game at 18 with a Stefani kill and a Heine solo block. A Heine-Sangrey block, a Sangrey kill and an Eagle error opened a 21-18 Buckeye lead. Trailing, 25-21, Juniata used two OSU errors, a Halteman kill and a Wanner block to tie the game at 25. A Sangrey kill and an OSU error made it 26-all. An Eagle error and a Stefani kill gave Ohio State a 28-26 lead. A Buckeye error cut the lead to 28-27.  Ohio State reached match point at 29-27 with a Heine kill. A Vrooman kill stopped the match point at 29-28. The Buckeyes won the game, 30-28, with a Stefani kill to win the match, 3-0. The Buckeyes hit .184 for the game to .114 for Juniata.

For the match, Ohio State hit .234 to .116 for Juniata. OSU had a 50-33 advantage in kills and a 44-31 margin in assists. Kehoe recorded a match-high 43 assists while Mike Kraft had 30 for the Eagles. The Buckeyes had a 3-2 edge in ace serves and gave up 15 service errors to 13 for Juniata. Defensively, Ohio State had a 32-23 margin in digs with Buckeye Kris Berzins recording a match-high 11. At the net, Ohio State had a 12 to 9.5 margin in team blocks. Overman and Sangrey shared match-high honors with four blocks each recording two solos and two assists.
